Independent Contractor (W-9) Status & Guidance

All Jump Start Sports coaches and staff are currently classified as independent contractors (W-9).

What this means

  • You are not an employee at this time
  • Taxes are not withheld from your payments
  • You are responsible for reporting your income and managing your own taxes
  • You will receive a 1099-NEC at year-end for total payments received

Payment structure

  • Compensation is paid per session, program, or role as agreed
  • You may accept or decline assignments based on availability
  • Payment is based on completed work, not hourly employment

Tax responsibility

As a contractor, you are responsible for:

  • Filing your own federal, state, and local taxes
  • Paying self-employment taxes, if applicable
Many contractors choose to set aside a portion of earnings for taxes. We recommend consulting a tax professional for guidance specific to your situation.

Potential future employee status

As our organization grows, some roles may qualify for employee (W-2) status in the future based on factors such as:

  • Consistent schedules and hours
  • Expanded responsibilities or leadership roles
  • Ongoing operational needs of the organization

There is no automatic conversion from contractor to employee. Any change in classification would be communicated clearly and documented in advance.
