Independent Contractor (W-9) Status & Guidance
All Jump Start Sports coaches and staff are currently classified as independent contractors (W-9).
What this means
- You are not an employee at this time
- Taxes are not withheld from your payments
- You are responsible for reporting your income and managing your own taxes
- You will receive a 1099-NEC at year-end for total payments received
Payment structure
- Compensation is paid per session, program, or role as agreed
- You may accept or decline assignments based on availability
- Payment is based on completed work, not hourly employment
Tax responsibility
As a contractor, you are responsible for:
- Filing your own federal, state, and local taxes
- Paying self-employment taxes, if applicable
Many contractors choose to set aside a portion of earnings for taxes. We recommend consulting a tax professional for guidance specific to your situation.
Potential future employee status
As our organization grows, some roles may qualify for employee (W-2) status in the future based on factors such as:
- Consistent schedules and hours
- Expanded responsibilities or leadership roles
- Ongoing operational needs of the organization
There is no automatic conversion from contractor to employee. Any change in classification would be communicated clearly and documented in advance.
